Ellington Darden tells the truth about his subject: you can’t get a tight, muscular waistline from doing just a few minutes of abdominal exercise a day. (This from a guy who has actually hawked an ab-training device on infomercials.) In Darden’s book, ASAP stands for “awareness, science, application, and persistence,” and his program promises that, if you work really hard, you’ll see results in six weeks. That doesn’t sound like much of a promise, but considering how many people work out for months–if not years–and don’t see any results, Darden’s book is a dash of welcome hope and reality.

Re Dennis Rogers’ review / comment about slow weight training by .. R. Botten ()
Dennis, I very much doubt the research you are referring to were the results between someone training the old dark ages way that most people are shown to use (lots of reps and sets 3 or more times a week, and throwing the weights around, i.e., using momentum to do most of the work for you) VS the SuperSlow protocol (twice a week max with a licensed SuperSlow trainer on low friction Medex weight machines where weight is moved in a straight, slow & controlled fashion until muscle failure, and then held another 10 seconds).

If you have never personally never trained with a SuperSlow trainer, then I invite you to try it for a month. You just might reassess your attitude about it and find your strength improves remarkably, and that you feel much better. You might even have an epiphany (as I did) as to why doctors and physiotherapists refer patients to Super Slow trainers… for a start there’s far less risk of injury.

By comparing over 10 abs books, I concluded… by .. cxlxmx ()
I purchased about 10 books from Amazon on abs in order to compare them. This one wisely smuggles in an over-all weight-loss plan under the guise of an ab book. However, like Men’s Health publications, it promises you something in a “six-week program,” which isn’t really long enough to get great results. Also, its dietary and nutrition recommendations are screwy, convoluted, and out of date. The bottom line is that when you look at the before and after pictures in this book of people who successfully completed the program, they don’t look that great and nowhere near having great abs. If you want a good book to help you with your abs, here’s my conclusion from comparing books…

If You Want to Trim Your Waistline: You can’t trim your waistline without losing fat, and you can’t lose fat around your waist without losing it everywhere (focusing on a muscle group like the abdominal muscles doesn’t burn fat in that location, just a little bit of fat from everywhere on the body). So, if you want to trim your waistline, skip the ab workout books and go with a good, proven overall weight loss and fitness book like Bill Phillips’ Body for Life. The Abs Diet is a similar program, but like all the Men’s Health publications, it advertises a 6-week transformation, which is just a little unrealistic. Plan on more like 12-24 weeks to see really noticeable changes if you are fat.

If You Want Sculpted Six-Pack Abs: If you are overweight at all, see above–you can’t get a six pack while you’re overweight, and you can’t lose abdominal fat by doing an ab workout, so go for overall fitness. However, if you are already lean, see below.

If You Want to Strengthen or Build Your Ab Muscles: If you’re trying to improve for work, play, or rehab, you might consider the following books: The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs Deluxe DVD Edition contains decently up-to-date information and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it, based on a six-week fitness course. If you’re looking for a similar book with more information, you can choose from The Complete Book of Abs or The Complete Book of Core Training. The Complete Book of Abs (1998) is a little out of date in terms of its dietary/nutritional recommendations, but it focuses more on exercises that develop the external abdominal muscles (the ones you see in a six-pack), including lots of variations on leg lifts, bicycle motion, and sit-ups. It will also give you more resources for creating your own program, and, if that’s what you want to do, go with this one instead of The Body Sculpting Bible. The Complete Book of Core Training (2006) focuses more on the functional body core, including internal abdominal muscles, legs, etc., and includes more trendy exercises using medicine balls, exercise balls, yoga, etc. A different sort of book is Stronger Abs and Back (1997), which was written before the current fad of selling “core training,” but contains the elements of core training because it gives good functional sports-focused advice. Its dietary recommendations are out of date, but it recommends a 24-week workout plan, which is much more realistic than the 6-week plans advocated by many of the other books.

If You Have Back Pain: See your doctor, and if he prescribes abdominal/core strengthening, see above.

My one-book recommendation: Body for Life.

My two-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back.

My three-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs.

My four-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs + The Abs Diet.

Hope this helps!!

Junk science by .. Dennis Rodgers ()
After all these years, Darden still preaches slow motion resistance training, a system proven to demonstrate mediocre results.

The Best Diet Book on the Market by .. Thomas A. Heikkinen (Maine)
A Flat Stomach ASAP is the best diet book on the market. I lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks on the program and it was not difficult for me. The superhydration for me was a snap and I personally thrived on that aspect of the program. Dr Darden is a genius with diet and exercise and you will learn a lot from his books. There is so much misinformation in the diet and exercise market today that you need to read Dr Darden books to set yourself straight. There is no magic pill or lies in his book and you will be healthier at the end. A great book.

Not a good book. Not at all. by .. Fernando Cabral (Brasilia, DF Brazil)
“A flat stomach asap” is a scam. Nevertheless, it works if you want to shed some weight. You can even get some muscle under your belt, which is not bad. So, why is it a scam?

The first two parts of the book comprise a cauldron of well-known facts spiced with some mystification. The author puts them under the titles “Awareness” and “Science”. After putting forth a string of truisms about the relationships between exercise and muscle, health and hydration, sleep and stress he pirouettes up in a leap of faith stating that gulping down gallons of cold water every day is good for you and helps you to lose fat. He even advances some arguments to “prove it”. Buy into that if you can.

Let’s leave truisms and unproved allegations behind us. Let’s jump to chapter 11 where the author describes the exercises you should do. If you paid US $ 17.00 for the book you might be happy to find that for that price you’ll learn half a dozen or so curls that will make your midsection stronger. As to myself, I agree they are all good exercises and may very well deliver part of the promise: give you one pound or so of muscle in your tummies.

I’ll save you the tiresome details. Let’s skip back to the page where a table displays a “calories per day” recommendation. The author recommends a man to eat from 1.200 to 1.500 calories per day. Averaged for the whole “program” it means 1,333 calories per day.

Now you can see where the mystification is: 1.333 calories per day for an adult male puts him on the verge of starvation. Any person that starves for (say) 45 days WILL LOSE WEIGHT, NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES. This is simple math: if his healthy, regular diet should contain, say, 2,500 calories per day, 1,333 put him in a daily deficit of 1.666.67. This means in 6 weeks he will miss 49,000 calories that represent 13 pounds (6,125 kilos).

Good old physics still holds true: if you burn faster than you replenish… you’ll end up with less.

The author states that on the average (p. 35) 41 men lost 23 pounds of fat after having been “through one or more of the phases of the A Flat Stomach ASAP course”. As the author does not allow us to know for sure what he means by “one or more of the phases”, let’s assume it to be 9 weeks (one and a half “course”) even though we know some took it more than twice (more than 12 weeks).

23 pounds in 62 days (9 weeks), gives us 1,324 calories/day. This represents the deficit for a diet containing only 1,333 calories/day. It has nothing to do with exercise but with hunger. That is, it has to do with our old friend, the low calorie diet.

Do some curls if you like. Cut 1,300 calories in your diet if you can survive starvation. After 6 weeks you will have lost something around 14 pounds. It does not matter you if you read or does not read “A flat stomach ASAP”.

So, save your hard-earned money because I’ll summarize the book for you: eating makes you fat, starving makes you lean.

I know, I know: few people resist a scam, especially a sting in a glossy cover with some mystifying, incredible promises.

But, if you think perhaps I am wrong, go ahead. And don’t forget to read the “special letter from Ellington Darden”, when he closes the book trying to sell you some snake oil he names “Perfect Score”. Good for him.

over the top by .. Kathrine Coyle ()
The book has some solid information, but some of the information is taken to the extreme or overgeneralized.

In general, some good considerations. I wouldn’t accept the all or nothing mentality as it doesn’t fit into real life business traveler needs.

Actually, It IS based on science by .. J. Larsen (Denver, CO)
Everyone needs to calm down. They’re writing style is not for everyone but happens to be one of my favorite things about the book. I like straight forward sassy women. I think it’s great. But I also take it with a grain of salt. They do base their claims on plenty of scientific studies and research. It’s all in the back of the book if you want to check it out. I now have the knowledge of what goes on in the meat, dairy, and other food industries and I will make smarter, organic, free-range, etc. decisions, or cut back on certain things. It is very informative, and I’m glad to know what these industries would rather the public not know. But I’m not giving up cheese or adopting their plan verbatim. What I really like about it is that it’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle change in eating habits. As a health educator I know (and I teach others) that diets do not work, but making healthy permanent change does. I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I would never recommend it to my mother (even though she would agree with all of their claims) or some other old fashioned, easily shocked person because of their straight talk. Some people just can’t handle it.

entertaining but needed more facts by .. hknewsgal17 (hong kong)
the title is a misnomer. buyers could pick up the book thinking they’ll be getting a round of lifestyle and nutrition tips. instead they get two women expressing their very strong views about the state of the american food industry. and while their facts are valid, there are bits and pieces that they don’t identify as the minuses to being vegan… and there are more than a few.

Awesome!!! by .. L. Hatt (Brandon, MS)
This book is amazing - funny, educational, realistic. This book changed my life, because it actually pushed me over the edge to become a vegetarian.

Bottom line: good read, interesting, and humorous.

good information by .. R. lowe (atlanta, ga)
This book contains alot of good information about the products we consume on a daily basis. I seem to be the only person who thinks the tone in which it was written was just dumb. I didn’t find the writers to be ‘just telling it like it is’. I thought they were trying too hard. Just kind of silly and inappropriate, and I’m no prude. I know it was all for shock value, but I still found all the profanity, for a self help book, to be really odd. But the information they provided was good and I catch myself reading labels more and really paying attention to what goes into my body. I will say they had proof to back up claims and probably did a years worth or more of research. Very important information delivered in an oddball way.

Easy to understand for us klutzes by .. Linda Carlson, (Seattle, WA United States)
I write most of each day, and by evening I’m aching from both the posture at the keyboard AND the stress of trying to be creative. What I really appreciate about “Relieve Stiffness” is that so many of the exercises can be done right at the desk and that they make sense to those of us who have difficulty understanding exercise instructions. “Hula hoop” and “Swing” I can understand and duplicate! If I spent a few minutes each hour with an exercise like “Easy sway” or “Back and forth,” I’d significantly reduce my stiffness at day’s end. I’m making this a goal for 2008!

Moving with ease by .. Ilona M. Lord (Tacoma, WA)
I loved Anita’s book on undulation. It’s an effortless way to get my body moving. I do a little undulation every morning to start my day, my body loves to wake up with this movement. I also use the undualtion movemnt in my Hellerwork practice, it really gets my clients connected to their bodies. Anyone can do this. I highly recommend this book.

Treatment Tool by .. Sharon A. Sandin (North Bend,WA)
I am a licensed massage practitioner, many of my clients come to me seeking relief from neck and back pain. I use undulation during my treatment sessions. My clients can use it as a tool to assist me with releasing deep painful muscles around their spines. I found the photos in the book showing what direction the spine is in for each movement to be very helpful. Sharon Sandin,LMP

“Body friendly” and practical by .. Faith Anderson (Tacoma, WA)
Why do I love this book? Let me count the ways:

1) The exercises in this book are very “body friendly”. If something feels uncomfortable, just continue moving without making the one move that is uncomfortable, and soon the “stuck” spot starts moving. You don’t have to hurt before you feel better.

2) I also find the movements give almost instant gratification - how often do you feel better and find relief in a matter of minutes?

3) But maybe the best thing is that you don’t need any special clothes or equipment, and for some exercises you don’t even have to stop what you are doing to get some relief. You can make small, unobtrusive movements (like when sitting in a meeting) and feel better. Since it is so easy I find myself doing it more often.

4) I have found that undulating in bed for just a few minutes before I get up in the morning starts the day with less stiffness.

I must mention that I am paralyzed from the waist down, so I can only do some of the exercises, but it is amazing to me that small movements can have such a big impact on improving how I feel. A great book.

Boser’s Undulation book is wonderful!!! by .. Leanne Haley (Johnson City, Texas)
As a fibromyalgia patient who also teaches yoga, Anita’s book is wonderful and gives more options to those who cannot tolerate some yoga poses. It is much easier for me to suggest modifications to my students since I have been using some of the suggestions and movements from Anita’s book. The directions are easy to understand and follow. I will continue to incorporate undulations in my yoga classes and at home.

Fitness Book Reader (LA)
I’ve read lots of fitness books, and I think Laurel House did a great job at interpreting Rob’s workout routine. I like Rob’s perspective on easy-to-do workouts for the everyday person. All of the tips on food I also found helpful. This is a great book to buy as a gift or to use for yourself if you’re interested in a casual but serious workout routine. And, of course, you can get a bit of celebrity gossip!

Book Description

This comprehensive collection of teacher-tested unit plans, lesson plans, and teaching and assessment tools will save any secondary school physical education teacher invaluable planning and preparation time. Each lesson plan moves toward written goals from the moment students walk onto the floor until the moment they leave. The lessons integrate physical, cognitive, and social skills in a natural sequence, allowing plenty of opportunity for repetition to help students ingest the material, develop competency, and be rewarded with a sense of control.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the text allows you to pull up lessons on the screen, modify them, and print them for your classes. You can then save them for later use. You can also adjust lessons to reflect your own style, pace lessons to meet your classes’ needs, and select drills that work best for your students. The result: quality lesson plans that meet the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) standards.

Both the book and the CD-ROM contain

• student homework,
• handouts for many of the sports,
• more than 25 performance assessment rubrics,
• quizzes,
• student portfolio checklists, and
• tournament charts.

The performance assessment rubrics provide a way for students, classmates, and teachers to evaluate students’ progress based on degrees of accomplishment and experience level. In fact, Complete Physical Education Plans for Grades 7-12 is the only book that contains performance assessment rubrics for secondary students in physical education—and the rubrics are so clear that students can use them to rate each other.

With Complete Physical Education Plans for Grades 7-12, you have everything you need to develop, plan, and assess a program. It allows you to spend less time in your office and more time in the gym and on the field doing what you love to do best.

Customer reviews

Excellent text for all phys ed teachers. by .. val drake (Peterborough, Ont. Canada)

In assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this text, probably the drawings are the weakest part, the dotted lines of action are at times quite confusing in the badminton & golf section and there seems to be an overabundance of male representation in most of the sports( but equal in the dance area). I would like to have seen a field hockey unit and some creative dance. But these are the only negative comments in 627 pages. WOW!!!!!!!

The strengths of the book are overwhelming. Ms. Kleinman emphasizes important facets that many teachers overlook.

* More action less oral explanation -too many teachers have Kids sitting listening to far too much info and forget they learn by DOING. She provide many examples of how to keep them moving, giving good hints on how to organize large numbers for maximum participation.

* Motivation is important - the example of using popular videos ( White Knights) for dance was excellent as were other suggestions.

* Using MIMETICS as part of the Warm up was a GREAT idea. It is often done immediately prior to a skill introduction but the thought of using it as a warm up was exciting, so much better than boring Jumping jacks and static stretches.

* The development and progression of skills and strategies were excellent, the integration of skills with mini games is so natural to keep the interest level up. And making adaptations of regular rules to encourage the newly learned skills was clearly highlighted. The division into beg/intermediate/advanced units simply identifies logical progression, too often people teach the same skills year after year.

* Teaching during tournaments is something that many teachers forget. Playing is a learning environment but analysis is essential to embrace an educational setting and Ms. Kleinman offers the teacher areas of focus for games analysis.

* Assessment in schools too often pertains to a statistical evaluation -how many baskets were scored? Whereas this texts provides very specific rubrics that are clearly identified and relate to the process and development of skill including understanding and application of strategy and defense play, something which very few other books have addressed.

* Similarly the provision of a quiz at the end of each unit gives the teacher ideas on how to test cognitive knowledge in practical subjects.

These are all refreshing new additions to texts in the field and this book should be on the desk of every physical education teacher in the country. The addition of a CD ROM which allows teachers to make adjustments to the evaluation and assessment charts, to personalize them for their own classes/students, is an incredible bonus. As is the recognition of modem technology with inclusion of current web sites as extra resources.

Reading through this text made me excited about teaching again and wondering if I had retired too early! Congratulations it is an excellent publication.

If you can only buy one PE resource, this is the one to buy! by .. Marilyn Laidlaw (San Francisco, CA)
Isobel Kleinman has produced the most comprehensive PE lesson plan book I have ever seen. From novice teachers to the veteran professional this book is packed with useful and informative information on the most common PE sports and activities currently required by national, state and district standards. Ms. Kleinman starts each chapter with reproducible handouts to introduce the sport/activity and allow for exploration beyond the basic info. Each LEVEL intro includes Unit Setup, Safety, Timeline, Assessment, and Additional Resources. Each LESSON includes Performance Goals, Cognitive Goals, Warm-Ups, Motivation, Teaching Sequence and Review. Student materials include Portfolio Checklist, Workout Charts, Logs, Performance Assessment Rubrics, and Quizzes. Comprehensive and complete lesson plans (with illustrations/diagrams) cover beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for an average three-week block of time. The book is divided into a comprehensive Introduction, Fitness, Lifetime Activities, and Team Sports sections. Appendices include Tournament Charts, General Assessment Rubrics and the NY State Physical Fitness Norms. The book comes with a CD ROM.

I have found the information in this book to be up-to-date and tremendously relevant. The book is well laid-out in outline format with headings in large bold type. AN OUTSTANDING RESOURCE FOR ANY TEACHER.

Good for the beginner by .. M. Taylor (NH)
If you are just getting into or thinking about a walking/running program this book is for you. If you have been doing both for some time, its a great read, just beyond where you are at in your program. I have given this book to my sister who has just turned 40 and she loved it.

Awesome book for the experienced runner and novice walker by .. Sandra K. Roberts ()
As I read this book (I am beginning a walking program), I became very honored to read about all the blood, sweat, and tears Ms. Switzer went through during her career as a runner. She makes you feel you are with her during those times. Her advice is sound, professional, and in your best interest. If you listen to what she tells you, i.e., how your shoes and clothes should fit; how you should start out on your program; and the wonderful advice to “get you out the door,” you will have a very long and rewarding running/walking program, that can and will enhance your life. This book has really changed my outlook, my exercise capacity, and pretty much my overall health! Thanks for writing this book, Ms. Switzer. I owe you big time! Sandy, in Florida.

Errors by .. ()
This book comes across as poorly edited and researched. Contains mispelled words and incorrect statements such as “air is 80% oxygen”. It is also hard for a beginning runner to relate to a marathoner who has run for almost her entire life.

INSPIRING AND SENSIBLE! BRAVO! by .. C.Z.S. (Mertztown, PA)
I hadn’t run for 17 years and never ran more than 3.5 miles. (I’m 40.) With the help of this book, I am up to 5 miles (and counting!). The book is easy to read. The program is easy to follow. However, this book is for people who are basically in good health and who like to exercise. The book will not GIVE you motivation, it will simply help you if you are already somewhat motivated and want to get in better shape. I have followed her advice, gotten great results and enjoyed the process. This book has been worth a million to me!

Excellent Resource by .. ()
I picked up this book after making a decision to get in better shape (even though I’m only 34). I’ve always hated running, so I’m not sure what prompted me to consider it. Her system for becoming a 30-minute runner definitely works. Both my partner and I made it to 30 minutes (although it took a little longer than ten weeks). I am now running 54 minutes, my partner 45 minutes. I’d recommend this book to anyone (not only women), even if you only use the time charts for becoming a 30 minute walker/runner and not the rest of the book.

Good Buy by .. Karen Bonds ()
I bought these for my niece and nephew. The activities are great but I wish the pictures were of real children. My niece and nephew do, too.

My Students LOVE These Cards! by .. L.W. (Redondo Beach, Ca)
I started mixing Yoga into my Student’s Ballet Cirriculum. I use the Yoga Deck at the end of class to warm down. Now my students are asking all through class “Can we play the Yoga cards now?!” I let them take turns picking from each colored group of poses and exercises.

The Yoga Deck has been a wonderful teaching tool for me and my students. I am so glad I bought them. They are invaluable!

Love Joyce Vedral by .. In_questgal (Texas, USA)
Usually, the authors don’t stick in my memory, and especially not exercise book authors, but Joyce did. I really loved this book. Got it a few years ago and I want to keep it, and infact am looking to collect and follow more of Joyce’s books. I kind of let go and did not weight train for a good while, and now I want to get back to doing it, and am reaching out for her book again, and not some other book. Somehow, I connected with her (or rather she connects with us) and her exercises. They were so convenient. No gym required. A chair, and the 3lb weights is all I needed. I loved the simplicity. 1 or 2 of them were a bit challenging to do for me though and I had some questions on the correct technique but I bet with more practice & patience I can do them just right. Challenge is a good sign. It helps us reach higher. Overall, they were veyr much do-able, I enjoyed them and I certainly felt a difference in my posture, in my strength, and in my entire mind-set after doing these for a time period. I would rate her super. If you are patient in doing the exercises, and consistent (very important), you will 100% reap the benefits. All the best and enjoy!

Moving past my plateu!! by .. ()
At age 20, I had already been through 3 surgeries due to bowel obstructions and Crohn’s Disease (chronic inflammation of the intestinal lining). Suffering with the disease kept me fairly slim through out my 20’s, but completely inactive. My well known “coke bottle shape” has always looked fine in clothes but, over the years I have lost A LOT of muscle tone and definition.

At 30 I had my son, and thankfully, my Crohn’s Disease took a dive…but as a result my weight shot up. I only gained 12 lbs. during my pregnancy with my son, but after having him, I found it difficult to control the amount of food I was eating. 4 years later, I found myself at an all time high of 206 lbs. I went on a reduced carb-calorie counting diet and lost 27 lbs, but was still unhappy with the way my body looked …and I was at a plateau. Even with my 1300-1400 calorie a day diet (I’m 5′7″), and briskly walking 3-4 times a day for 15 min, I couldn’t get anymore weight off. I searched the web for a solution. I came to the realization that I needed to rebuild my muscles to boost my metabolism and reclaim my body shape… without the fat and cellulite.

I stumbled across Dr. Vedral’s book while looking for a weight-training program that wouldn’t impact the already limited time in my day and would cut out going to the gym (I hate the gym!). After two weeks of continuing my own diet, following her exercises and cutting my wallks down to 2 a day, I have lost 4.5 lbs! Her program is direct and well spelled out. I wake up a few minutes earlier in the morning to complete the exercises. It does take me a little more than 12 min a day, simply because I find that I need to do some stretching before and after, which she doesn’t really require in this program. My only gripe would be that some of the pictured illustrations are more “cutesy” posed, than the true form that you need to start at, but the written word for the start position clarifies it for you. All and all, I couldn’t be a happier. I can FEEL it working and feel confident that within a few weeks I will SEE results of more muscle tone and definition. All of my muscles have a “good” soreness they haven’t felt in years and it feels great!!

Because of the light weights and basic movements I think 12 Minute Total Body Workout is a great book for those who are desiring to boost your personal fitness program, no matter were you’re starting point is. Thanks, Dr. Vedral!! I love this book!!

Narcissistic, simplistic, and shallow by .. Mohamed F. El-Hewie (Hackensack, NJ USA)
Though this book was published in 1989, its substance was recycled in other forms, spreading the same confusing message.

The author is unsettled on the duration of daily workout from 12 minutes, 15 minutes, and then 20 minutes. In this book, the author proposes 7 days a week of weight training. In others, she proposes working out twice a week. She talks about “total body building”, “supercuts”, and “fat burning” without having the slightest clue on the basic physical facts about their scientific origin.

Here are some absurd errors you will find in this book:

1)	The book claims the “you can shape up in no time if you do not have time to shape up” which is a lie.
2)	Page 32, “the trapezius muscle is labeled as the latissimus dorsi. Then on Page 112-113, she describes “shoulder press with dumbbells” as “lateral pulldown” and claims to workout the latissimus dorsii. Thus, she confuses pulling for pushing. Though the book is introduced by a medical doctor (Jude T. Barbea) and written by an author with Ph.D. in English literature, the book completely misrepresents basic weight training teaching.
3)	Page 139, “Eggs help raise beneficial HDL, break up cholesterol deposits and carry them away from blood vessels”. So, how many eggs do you need to completely get rid of atherosclerosis?????
4)	Page 139, “fibers help eliminate 10% of fat intake since they (fibers) pass through unregistered”. She does not know how the fat is digested in the intestine and assumes that fat elimination is simply “sliding through” with fibers.

Here is her list of books that demonstrate the mad zeal of recycling simplistic and misleading information:

1.	12-Minute Total-Body Workout
2.	Bone-Building/Body-Shaping Workout: Strength, Health, Beauty, in Just 16 Minutes a Day
3.	Bottoms Up!
4.	College Dorm Workout
5.	Definition: Shape Without Bulk in 15 Minutes a Day
6.	Gut Busters: The 15-Minute-A-Day, 12-Week Plan
7.	Hard Bodies Express Workout: The Twice-A-Week Fitness Program That Really Work

8.	Now or Never: Keep Your Body Young, Fit and Firm with the Weight Training Program That Works Even as You
9.	Supercut
10.	The Bathing Suit Workout
11.	The Fat-Burning Workout: From Fat to Firm in 24 Days
12.	Toning for Teens: The 20-Minute Workout that Makes You Look Good and Feel Great!
13.	Top Shape: 12 Weeks to Your Ideal Physique
14.	Weight Training Made Easy: Transform Your Body in Four Simple Steps

When I browsed through similar books that claim to achieve magic fitness results in about 15 minutes or so, I stumbled on a general trend. Whether the author is a man or a woman, those books clearly show narcissistic authors, with simplistic views who claim to lead the world to perfection. All share fond of their bodily outlook, neurotic, and impatient in acquiring knowledge, or adapting to new trends in modern exercise teaching.

The simplest rule of staying fit is “simple counting of Calories”. One Calorie per minute worth of work will amount to 60 calories per hour and 1440 Calories per day. If you try to condense that in 15 or 20 minutes, you will need to expend energy at a rate of 72 Calories per minute, which is impossible even by swimming in cold water or cycling at top speed.

Great book…. by .. ()
This book has a very do-able routine for anyone with limited space and limited budget. All you need are two 3-lb. dumbbells and a chair.

She does have a written cheat sheet at the back of the book, but the only quibble I have is that there should be a photo cheat sheet as well–the names of the exercises don’t immediately bring them to mind.

There is good variety in the exercises, and you can use them to supplement any of the exercises in Slow Burn and Power of 10. Her explanations of Isometric Exercise and Dynamic Tension fit perfectly in with the super slow weightlifting concept.

Very Efficient Workout! by .. Michael Davidson (Lebanon, OH USA)
Great workout for body toning. I loved it but I believe that in addition to her 12 minute workout, some cardiovascular exercise is necessary to be truly fit. Also, it is necessary to watch what you eat of course. I have personally seen and felt great results in a short period of time. I still struggle with some of the ab exercises and I did feel sore in my abs, legs and glutes for a while.

Compelling by .. Inez (Claremore, OK USA)
I liked this book. The illustrations are fantastic. It includes good explanations of the spiritual work that can be involved during the process of drawing mandalas. It focuses primarily on the role and image of light. Everything is done on black paper. The guides for making your own mandalas are good. The instructions for shading and the use of color are very helpful. It helped me understand that not all mandalas rely on a geometric form. If you decide to use colors, do what the book suggests and spend the extra money to get the pencils listed. It’s a spectacular difference in the end product.

Wonderfully inspiring! by .. S. Gerlitz (NY USA)
This is a great book on many levels.

The other reviewers have done such a good job that I’ll just leave it at that.

I will buy copies for friends. A perfect gift.

An Inspiration to my Art Students! by .. Sharon B. Kennedy (Central Virginia, USA)
Last year I used this book as a resource for a special high school art unit that I developed entitled “Sacred Circles.” In addition to learning about circular artwork in various cultures and world religions, students used Judith’s beautiful illustrations and step by step guides to create mandalas of their own. (…) This is a book that I still have available in my classroom and students continue to refer to it (independently!) to advance their drawing techniques. SO glad I bought this!

Radiantly Inspiring by .. N. H. Turner (Tallahassee, FL USA)
The beauty of the mandalas pictured in the book intimidated me because it had been so many years since I’d created any art. I didn’t think I could do it. But I did it and I’m extremely grateful to Judith Cornell for writing this book. Working on the exercises at home, alone, is not the same experience as it would be in a group. The group can offer a creative support level that helps each individual surpass previous achievements. However, I’m so happy with the mandalas I created as a result of these exercises that I’ve put each one up on the wall. And, even more important, I’ve continued to draw. No more creative blocks for me!

Incredibly AWE inspiring! by .. ()
Mandala: Luminous Symbols for Healing, by Judith Cornell, is absolutely the most incredibly beautiful book I’ve ever held in my hands. Holding and looking at it, even before reading, is like a sacred experience. Is it the beauty of the lay-out and illustrations? The very real spiritual impact of the mandalas presented, both historical and contemporary? A moment of healing even in the first moment’s gasp of awe while browsing its pages? One even begins to caress its binding. One of my favorite activities now is to present it to friends and watch their faces–their eyes pop open, their jaws drop in amazement–and hear the quick intake of breath as its color begins to radiate into their awareness. Beyond the first impression, reading took me to awesome depths and insights regarding ultimate reality, syntheses I’d previously long puzzled. Don’t miss this dazzling yet holy experience. Look, read, and practice the simple yet brilliant art-as-at-one-ment exercises for the depth of your life.
